Emerald comes from the Latin word, smaragdus, meaning green. Emeralds come in a range of shades of green: from deep darkish green to soft green, fine grass green and light green. They are strong gemstones, registering 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, where diamonds register a 10. However, although they are reasonably tough, attention should be paid when wearing emerald jewelry since they can be chipped or scratched.

Most emeralds have inclusions and it is rare to discover a flawless natural emerald, which is why a top-quality natural emerald will often be worth more than a top-quality diamond of the same weight. Almost all natural emeralds are treated to improve their color and eliminate visible imperfections. The industry-accepted practice is to use a green-tinted oil to fill in any cracks and reinforce the emerald against accidental chipping or splintering.

Being closely associated with the color of Spring, emeralds are designated as the birthstone for May, while it has also become the traditional gift for couples celebrating 20th or 35th wedding anniversaries. Emeralds have been mined in several countries on different continents, and they include Columbia, Russia and Brazil, as well as Madagascar and Zambia.
One of the largest emeralds ever discovered was the Mogul Emerald, which weighed 217.80 carats. Another famous emerald was the 37.82-carat Chalk Emerald which has splendid clarity and a deep green color. It is widely considered to be among the very best emeralds ever mined in Colombia. Legend has it that it was once the centerpiece of an emerald and diamond necklace belonging to a leader of the former state of Baroda in India. It was set in a ring by Harry Winston Inc, and the emerald is surrounded by 60 pear-shaped diamonds totaling 15 carats.
